6 questions to ask to know whether you should or shouldn’t

May 14, 2012 by Kevin White

One of the issues that many Christians face is what to do with the “grey” areas. Those things that they are just not sure if as a Christian they should be doing or not.  Obviously we are not talking about things that the Bible clearly states as sin but those things that the Bible is silent about or doesn’t give a direct command one way or the other. There are two extremes when it comes to this type of question. One is traditionalism which is teaching something that is not in the Bible as if it were in the Bible and license which says that we can pretty much do what ever we want because the Bible doesn’t forbid us. It is obvious that these two extremes are wrong but how can we know where to draw the lines. Well here are six question, that while not exhaustive, can help steer you in the right direction.

How to know what I should or should not do:

1. Is it something that is really necessary or just extra and not that important?

Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
– Many times the things that we think we can’t live without are really not the important.

 2. Is it something that I am in control of or something that is controlling me?

1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
– There may be certain things that are not sin in themselves but when they take control of our lives they are.

 3. Is it something that is edifying or destructive for me?

1 Corinthians 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not..
– Many things that don’t seem to be that bad may have a destructive results in the long term.

 4. Is it something that Christ would do?

1 John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
– Our goal in life is to be more like Christ and that starts when we begin to walk like him.

 5. Is it an example that others can follow?

1 Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
– How often do we say “Do as I say and not as I do”

 6. Is it something that would bring honor to the Lord?

1 Corinthians  10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
– Is it something that I would be embarrassed to be doing if the Lord were to return?
